HOW DO YOU MEASURE YOUR SUCCESS?
People have different ways to measure their own success. I remember well back when I was a young professional just after I finished college, I heard one of the big bosses back then say that he cared very much about having created so many employment opportunities and was happy to have been able to give all these people a reliable source of income for them and their families.
Having heard this from a top boss did go very far on my thoughts and saw the humble thinking of him despite of his high-end position. Honestly at that moment it did not cross my mind the kind of leader I could be and how I would see all the employees that work for me. I didn’t realize back then that I was going to be able to climb the ladder this far in management and be able to blur lines and country frontiers and work in international market making a difference.
But one thing was for certain, I never forgot those words that the boss said back then and later in my career every now and then as I was climbing the organizational chart I thought about the kind of person, manager, leader and boss I wanted to be, and I was becoming. I learned in all these years that I have worked for the same company many good things but honestly, I also learned or saw a few bad ones that certainly I wanted to avoid or make sure did not repeat or make the same mistakes again.
Many of these things happened to me, and I always said to myself if I ever in the future am in a position of management, I will never make these things with my personnel, because I knew how they affected me, and they will do the same with others regardless of country of origin, age or position.
I have been fortunate to work in three different countries: Mexico, USA and China and in each of them I have managed hundreds of different people, sometimes office people or factory employees and their work and needs are completely different.
But I have realized one thing very clear, I believe that success as a leader should be measured by how well the people that work for you succeed later in their professional career. The greatest gift of leadership is a boss who wants you to be successful. Good managers are like that, good managers inspire and people below them want to emulate their bosses, because great bosses see a person and not just an employee, employees are a sum of their total emotional state, socio-cultural and economical background, talent and unique needs.
Good managers spot the trouble and know people sometimes are going to fail or make mistakes but knowing when to pull the strings just enough to bring you back in action and save you from a fall is a sure good boss quality.
Good bosses create opportunities for their employees and are constantly the support for all of them making sure you are appreciated, making sure you are contributing and that let you see how your work is helping the company make progress and move forward, and making sure you are recognized because of the work you do, but above all they make sure they are helpful in making their people become successful.
What kind of leader are you? Do any of these things apply to you? How do you measure your own success?
