LEADERSHIP IS A PRECIOUS GIFT
Your title makes you a manager, but your people make you a leader. Leadership is certainly a precious gift that not many people pay attention to, care about or are aware of. The only thing that people think of or relate leadership with is the word boss: Leadership=Boss! And certainly, is not like that.
We all know the bosses who micro manage their staff by telling them how to do their work, bosses that are the type of persons that think they know everything about anything. They think they are good designers, product developers, good communicators, professional speakers, strategy experts, marketing gurus and so on, the list could be endless.
We know bosses who frustrate innovation and good ideas, bosses that only share credits when targets are met, bosses who think are always right and all the time when something goes wrong blame others, bosses who are feared and respected by employees but never loved.
Why become or be a boss like that? Usually these bosses are appointed and not chosen, they feel inferior to their staff’s knowledge, they are afraid to make mistakes, they are always reacting instead of acting, they do not take risks, they always hold their staff accountable and last, they have zero humor. I personally do not trust or like anyone who doesn’t laugh often even when things are not going well.
You can’t control life and you can’t control people all the time, things often go in unexpected ways, like what is happening now in our industry. I don’t think anyone 5 years ago expected to be in the situation we are now, and it just keeps getting worse as you know and are very aware of the USA antidumping recent announcement and preliminary 103% tax to Chinese Ceramic goods.
It requires REAL LEADERSHIP to deal with these new extremely difficult challenges and the best way to deal with them at least is with good attitude and even a little humor. This is what real good leaders do best, they asses the situation, accept it, they relax and keep working hard on their plans to face these difficult times, they know that life always finds its way. Things will eventually get better, the bad stuff is not going to last 100 years, the sun will shine another day!
So, what makes leaders great?
Good leaders always serve their people and trust their staff knowledge, accept that failure is inevitable, set clear goals, they always make themselves accountable and always embrace good humor. Bosses always try to be in control by taking back control, and leaders know they are in control when they give up control. Bosses try very hard to be a boss and leaders never try to be a leader.
Leadership is not a title or a trophy, it is living by setting the example, leadership is a very precious gift. You become a leader the moment your people make you their leader!
Respect is earned, honesty is appreciated, trust is gained, and loyalty is returned!
So, are you a boss or a leader? Are you ready to lead our beloved ceramic industry out of this hole that we are at?
I am ready! Let’s do it together!
