你认为展厅的美女重要吗?
When I was living in the USA and in Charge of the stone business of the company we had four busy retail showrooms. Back then at that time we were in need of personnel for the front desk showroom. Typically this position was in charge of helping the customers se1ect the best stone slabs or tile, show them the options available, persuade them to but the best products and secure the purchase.
我还在美国负责IMC石材公司业务的时候,有四个非常忙碌的零售展厅。当时我们需要一个前台人员,这个职位主要是帮助客户挑选最好的石材板或者石材砖,给他们展示各种方案,说服他们成交购买合适的产品。
You needed to have 4-6 showroom (Customer Service) people either lady or man.
你需要有4-6个展厅导购,不管男还是女。
To me the most important thing about this job was to have a responsible, dedicated, smart capable person. Of course no discrimination was allowed in the hiring process regarding looks, sex (Man or Lady), Age, Color of skin, nationality, etc.
对我来说,这个岗位人员最重要的是有责任心,敬业,聪明能干。当然了,在整个招聘过程中不允许有任何关于长相、性别、年龄、肤色、国籍的歧视。
So after a few days interviewing we ended up hiring a lady not too old but not too young, not ugly but also not beautiful and a little too much overweight but not extremely fat. The lady was very smart, dedicated, responsible and definitely very capable of doing the assigned responsibilities.
几天面试之后,我们聘用了一位女士,不老但不算年轻,不难看但也称不上漂亮,有一点分量但也不是很胖。这位女士非常聪明,敬业,很负责任,绝对胜任她的工作岗位。
Business and service was back as usual and sales were normal, not up or down and one thing for sure happened: Nobody said anything good or bad about the lady and her impact on increasing sales was not measurable. She was doing her job, she was doing it right and that was it.
生意和服务回到了常态,销售也正常,没有增长也没有降低,但是有一件事是肯定的:没人说这位女士好或坏,她对销售增长的作用也很难估计。她只是在正确地做她的工作。
Until one day, a customer came to my office (Most of the time were man because they were stone fabricators, most of them owners of shops) he said he needed to talk to me and closed the door. And he said: Sorry to tell you this Mr. Valles but what is wrong with IMC? And I asked why? What was he trying to tell me? And he said: Are you guys hiring the personnel by the Kilo or what? He also added: I think you should be more careful about whom you hire to work in your showroom. It is very important to have beautiful looking ladies, I can assure you if you do so you will increase the traffic in your showroom, I will come here more often and definitely you will increase your sales. That’s all I have to say, thank you for your time.
直到有一天,一个客户来到我的办公室(大部分时候都是男的,因为他们都是石材加工商,大部分人都有自己的店面),他说他需要找我谈谈,然后关上了门。他说:“Valles先生,很抱歉跟你说这些,但是IMC是怎么回事?”我问:“为什么?”他想告诉我什么呢?他接着说:“你们这些家伙招人是按重量做标准吗?”他还说:“我觉得你对于展厅招什么样的工作人员要更谨慎一些。展厅有漂亮的女士非常重要,我可以向你保证,这样做将会增加你的展厅客流量,我来的次数会更多,此外,我肯定这绝对会增加你的销售。这是我所要说的,谢谢你的时间。”
I listened and paid attention to his recommendations but did not fully agreed with is comments. A few weeks later that lady that we hired got sick and couldn’t get back to work with us, so we started interviewing candidates again: Man, ladies, young, old, Hispanic, Asian, etc. We honestly never showed any preference whatsoever, we just wanted the BEST person for the position. And guess what? A very young 23-25 year old lady, very beautiful, smart and capable was our top choice so we ended up hiring her. How often do you get the opportunity to hire a person like that? Man or Lady I do not want to discriminate. There is a saying that rarely any very beautiful person is smart! Anyway……..Then I thought about the words that that customer said when he came to my office and I asked myself: Let’s see what happens! Let’s see if there is any change in traffic or sales or attitude by having this new young and beautiful lady around.
我认真地倾听他的建议,但是并不能完全认同他的观点。几个礼拜之后,我们聘用的这位女士生病了,无法回来继续工作,于是我们又开始了对不同的应聘者进行面试:男的,女的,年轻的,老的,西班牙裔的,亚裔的。老实说,我们真的没有什么特殊的偏好,我们只想招到最合适的人员。猜猜怎么样了?一个非常年轻,大概23-25岁的女士成为了我们的首选,她很漂亮,也很聪明能干,所以我们最后聘用了她。你招到这样的人的几率有多高呢?我不想歧视,但是有一个说法,长得非常漂亮而且聪明的人不多!不管怎么说。。。然后我想起了那个来到我办公室的客户以及他的话,我对自己说:看看会发生什么吧!客流或者销售是否会因为这位漂亮的女士而有所改变?
And guess what? It did not take very long when that same customer came again to our showroom and then went to my office and closed the door one more time and said to me: That is what I was talking about!! You did the right thing!! You will see me more often here and I will buy more stuff from you guys, thank you for listening.
Honestly speaking we never took this decision because this person came to my office to complain about the looks of our showroom people. It just happened.
你猜怎么着?没过多久那个客户又来到我们展厅并且跑到我办公室关上门说:“这就是我跟你说过的!你做了正确的事情!你将会更经常见到我,我会向你们买更多的产品,谢谢你的倾听。”但事实上,我们做这个决定并不是因为他跑到我办公室抱怨展厅人员的长相。一切是顺其自然发生的。
A few weeks later we for sure noticed an increase in traffic in the showroom and a slight increase as well in sales. We started as well getting complements about how good our service was and the good looking girl in our showroom.
几个礼拜之后,我们的确发现展厅的客流以及销售有增长。同样我们也收到了关于我们的服务有多棒,以及对展厅漂亮女士的表扬。
So my question to you is: Do you think this is important yes or not?
所以我的问题是:你认为这个是否重要呢?
I still personally believe that you should have the most capable person regardless of the looks, but it does not hurt at all if the person is good looking!
我个人仍然认为不管外表怎样你首先应该聘请最能干的人,但是如果这个人又能干又漂亮的话也无妨。
