YOU DON’T BUILD A BUSINESS, YOU BUILD PEOPLE AND THEN PEOPLE BUILD THE BUSINESS
This Year more than 150 large companies failed to stay afloat. What are the real reasons behind their failure? Did they fail to beat the competition, or failed to innovate, did they have cash flow issues, or blame the economic slowdown, the environmental new policies? bla, bla, bla!!
When companies do better, we give credit to their leaders, but when they fail, we often blame external factors. As we all know every success or failure has two dimensions, example: the inner game and the outer game. We often over-emphasis on the outer part of the game when companies lose their ground and forget the inner part which the sum of its leadership team and the culture that essentially, they had created. The outer part is less controllable and common for companies in the same sector or industry like ours. Then how come a few companies in the same industry delay their mortality and stay healthy for long?
Take the classic case study of Nokia, we can easily conclude that Nokia failed to innovate the new technology and so other players like Apple and Samsung disrupted their business model with their new mobile technology. But how can a company like Nokia who owned half of the global Smartphone market in 2007 with huge annual spent in research and development fail to innovate? Whereas companies like Apple with much fewer resources disrupt the whole ecosystem?
Companies fail when their leader fails to succeed because companies never do business, ONLY PEOPLE DO. A great leader has the power to bend reality and evolve against all odds. Though Nokia lost their ground in Mobile business, today they are one of the top companies globally in high-value digital communication infrastructure, thanks to its great new leader who was instrumental in turning around the company from a deep crisis.
As Charles Darwin said “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, not the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.” Companies fail when the organization’s culture and its leaders are not prepared to understand or cope up with the change. This especially happens when the leadership thinks that they are too big or too good to fail.
In business and politics, we need great leaders.
