Every time I travel to Mexico or the USA and Europe one of the first things that I notice immediately is the change in the air quality and the blue skies. For any Chinese either business man or travelling on pleasure or as tourists the exact same thing happens.
But the quality of the air or the blue skies are just a part of the whole environmental issues that are significantly different than China. Other things like the water contamination, the falling of trees, the lack of birds in the sky, the smog, etc.
When I started coming to China and more specifically to Foshan it used to have within the city limits more than 300 ceramic factories with very little or no strict environmental controls enforced or complete lack of judgement from the manufacturers. The water of the rivers was getting contaminated by the industrial waste of the ceramic factories, the use of heavy oil or diesel fuel were creating unbelievable amounts of smog contaminating the air and the rapid increase of the economy and the more cars being bought and used by the consumers were also contributing to make the air and the city very unattractive to live due to the heavy and increasing contamination.
The city and government was smart enough to realize that it was absolutely imperative to move all the manufacturing facilities out of the limits of the city, but also realized that these couldn’t be too far from Foshan. So all the factories were eventually moved to Kaiping,Gaoming, Sanshui and so on.
The air and environmental conditions improved a lot in Foshan. But was the problem moved and spread out to other parts of the province or other cities? I hope not! I think when the factories were moved they were also required to improve their environmental standards as well.
In Mexico and USA as an example in our factories we MUST absolutely have water treatment plants to treat all the water wasted and used in the process and everything is recycled including the solids generated from the water treatment plants and it is re-used in the milling process as a raw material. We recycle almost 90% of the fired and unfired broken tiles back in the process, we co-generate energy with the use of the heat and vapor of the kilns and spray drier.
What most people think is that when stricter regulations ae imposed to improve the environment automatically increases the cost of production. While that fact may be true if nothing else is done except to comply with the rules on the other hand it may actually reduce your costs if you are willing to check all the available potential cost saving solutions and also comply with the environmental rules.
I think sooner than later as we have already seen the government will slowly but steadily become stricter, as you know of multiple ceramic factories being closed in different parts of the country for non-compliance with the rules and will keep pushing the manufacturers to improve their standards and become more clean.
When we take people to our factories specially the one in Texas, USA they just can’t believe there is a ceramic factory in that building they see when they arrive to our facilities, because there is no trash, no waste, no smoke, no smell, no stains, no pallets around, clean floors, organized areas, and so on.
Being conscientious about our environment becomes a part of your company philosophy and makes your working place much better, more efficient and likable.
We often forget that we are nature and that nature is not something separate from us. The trees are our lungs, the rivers our bloodstream, we are all interconnected and what we do to the environment we ultimately do to ourselves. We didn’t inherit this earthfrom our ancestors. We borrow it from our children and future generations!
