Once again and for the second time in the last two years I stayed in China during this western holiday period. I have stayed once before but 5 years ago during this season.
For the western world this is a religious holiday (The most important one) especially for the Catholics or Christians. The main Holiday is Dec. 25 which is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.
Anyway, enough with the explanations I am giving you and now let’s go to the point.
It has been very interesting to see how Asia and specially China have been slowly adopting this western tradition but more on the commercial side of it (Definitely not the religious side).
In Hong Kong has been popular already for many, many years. Every shopping mall is fully decorated with Santa’s, Christmas Trees and many other ornaments like fake snow related to the season. Also many other businesses do the same especially if they are owned by western people. There are a lot of discounted prices and specials because the people relate this season also with shopping and gifts for relatives or friends.
I believe that the people in China also kind of know that the kids get gifts under the tree on the 25th which is the main western Santa Claus tradition.
And in Hong Kong (I was there Dec 18 and 19) there were a lot of people in the malls shopping and there were a lot of discounts and good pricing.
Stores like Toys R Us are fully packed and really busy and I am quite sure many homes in Hong Kong had their Christmas Gifts and Dinner on the 24th and 25th of December.
In Mainland China is quite different. I know that many people know of this season because of friends, television, internet or whatever. What you do not see much is the Christmas decoration. Maybe only in the 5 star western hotels, western businesses and maybe my house but that is about it. Not much at all to be honest with you.
It was quite nice to see something that I was personally impressed with: LINGNAN TIANDI
It was very nicely decorated with lights, lanterns, snowflakes and other ornaments. It made me feel good. Another thing that impressed me was the amount of people that was out having dinner or coffee or just walking in this area on the 25th of December. It felt like it was a holiday and nobody had to work on this day. There were a lot of people kind of like in Chinese New Year.
Even though the commercial and the shopping part is not the main reason for the season it felt good to see everybody out celebrating or just having a good time. It made me feel like back home in Dallas USA.
